With the cold air and dry heat indoors, winter can be rough on your hair and throw off the balance your hair holds. Thrown off balance in the hair can cause dullness, brittleness, and hard managing. The key to maintaining healthy hair in the winter is understanding protein vs. moisture, following which your hair needs or is lacking.

Let's talk protein...
Protein gives our hair strength. When our hair lacks this protein, the cortex (the inner layer of the hair) becomes disrupted. This leads our hair to breakage and hair that struggles to hold its shape. Protein in the hair allows the hair to remain strong and lowers breakage.
If your hair is lacking protein, it is best to avoid:
-Rough brushing
-Styling wet hair
-Excessive heat styling (blow dryers, curling wands, flat irons, etc.)
-Over-processing with color
Let's talk moisture...
Moisture is what keeps our hair soft and allows flexibility. When our hair lacks moisture, the cuticle (the outer layer of the hair) becomes disrupted. This leads our hair to become dry, frizz, and tangled. Since the dry winter air is pulling our moisture from our hair, extra moisture is often needed as hydration.
If your hair is lacking moisture, it is best to avoid:
-Over-washing
-Alcohol-dense products
-Harsh or sulfate-heavy shampoos
-Ignoring hydrating masks/treatments
The tricky part is, too much protein or too much moisture can cause problems. Balance is so important here, and why professional help makes such a difference! If your not sure where your hair lands, talk to your hair expert here at Salon Christopher to discuss your hair needs. Having healthy winter hair starts with the right care!
